DIO and Animals
Answer to this question: Hey Dio scholar-sama! I am sorry to annoy u but I have another question if that’s ok. What’s up with that pic of Dio holding Danny?!? The one on Jojoium vol 1 with pink hair Dio... is it just it exists cuz it’s cute? Like I lov it but I can’t fathom Dio snuggling up to that massive dog he killed LOL do u have any theories on that or is it just “cuz Araki felt like it?” Do u think Dio maybe does like some animals after all like maybe Pet Shop or nah? Lol stupid question but I’m so confused
I think there’s no need to theorize about that one, because the interviewer asked the same question in the Jojonium volume that the picture is from!
The “Just for the cover” response does seem to imply that yes, this picture literally only exists because it’s cute lmao
As for whether Dio likes any animals… Well, we certainly know he doesn’t like dogs, we’ve seen what he did to Danny, and he seems to be in genuine disbelief when George says that Jonathan and Danny are friends, which certainly implies that he views animals as being underneath humans.

He also very casually kills a cat in Stardust Crusaders during one of his time stops, and has killed several animals during his chimera experiments (though granted he COULD have just been using corpses for those)
I think he generally views animals as being far beneath humans, but doesn’t actively hate most of them, just like he doesn’t actively hate humans - he just doesn’t care about them and sees them as inferior. He probably doesn’t even hate dogs THAT much, only Danny specifically, because he was Jonathan’s.
Pet Shop is an exception because he’s not JUST an animal - he’s an animal with a stand, which means that not only is he an extremely rare and intriguing kind of creature, but he is also of much higher intelligence than other animals. It’s not just that either - he’s an animal with a stand, who is also willing to serve him.
I think DIO’s view of the world is kinda like this;

Humans and animals are both considered food at the bottom of the pyramid, hence Dio’s infamous bread quote in Phantom Blood
What makes humans better than animals is that they have a much larger potential to serve him, or be of use to him otherwise. They are also his main food source, though it’s likely that he also can and would eat animals (Pillarmen were able to eat animals, so it’s possible that DIO could also consume them if he wanted to. I don’t think anything is stopping DIO from eating regular food, since he does consume wine.)
The only humans of any real value are humans who can serve him. Some of them have more value than others (such as Enya and Vanilla Ice)
Then there’s Pucci, who was integral to DIO’s Heaven plan, making him more important, because he’s not as easily replaceable.
On my livestreams we often joke a lot about what a woke bae DIO is because he sees everyone as equal(ly worthless), and I’d feel pretty confident to assume that this worldview of his extends to animals at least to a certain degree.
The thing about DIO is that while he has no regard for life, he doesn’t actively go out and kill people just for the hell of it. He’s a very practical person who thinks things through and doesn’t like wasting time on useless things, hence his memed-to-death quote, “Useless”.
TL;DR:
-The illustration with Danny does indeed only exist because it’s cute and Araki just felt like drawing it
- DIO probably views all animals as incredibly inferior to humans (who he views as incredibly inferior to himself), but Pet Shop is a special case because he’s a stand user and DIO’s servant, and therefore of use to him.
- The value of any living being is directly proportional to how useful they are to DIO.
