Dio and Diego
Answer to this question:
A lot of people think Diego is a more well-written version of PB Dio. As, at least in my opinion, the #1 Dio simp, what do you think about that?

Firstly, thank you, I will wear that title with pride and add it to my about page.
Okay, so this is the first time I see someone specifically compare Diego to PB Dio. People usually say that Diego is a more well-written DIO in general and frankly, it makes me go absolutely feral LMAO
Comparing Diego and Dio Brando, Diego does seem to be more complex and grey, but I honestly kinda struggle to compare the two in terms of who’s better. I’ll only take human Dio into account with this, since I think vampire Dio becomes too different and extreme to be compared to the human Diego based on what I chose to focus on here.
Dio’s motivation (in his human life) is to essentially destroy Jonathan and take over the Joestar fortune. He does this partially to spite his father who, in a way, “left” him part of the Joestar fortune, as well as because he outright despises Jonathan. There’s a lot of complexes there, this child is full of hate.

Whether he was born like this or made like this by his father is uncertain but equally likely, as Speedwagon is written as a man of the similar background as Dio, but who is still good at heart regardless of the cruel streets he grew up in.
Meanwhile, Diego doesn’t really have a connection to Johnny. He took care of the Joestar horses at one point? And I guess they kinda saw each other as rivals but they didn’t seem to take each other all that seriously? Diego mostly just messed with Johnny and Johnny just didn’t really give a fuck about Diego, seeing as when Diego was brutally torn apart by a train, Johnny had literally zero reaction.
If I recall correctly, if it weren’t for the corpse parts, his motivation would be completely separated from Johnny. Diego’s motivation is far easier to understand and sympathize with because the people he actually wants to take revenge on are the people who hurt him and his mother in the past. He was corrupted by the cruel, careless society.

Diego is a really interesting character, probably my favourite in SBR (or, well, at the very least tied with best boy Magenta Magenta) but him and Dio are hardly comparable to me. DIO is a legitimately corrupted person driven by a desire for power, while Diego is driven by revenge…. and ok, also a desire for power, but for a different reason.
One could certainly say that this makes him better written than PB Dio because he’s actually apparently fighting for something, but to me personally, it’s hard to compare, MOSTLY because of the lack of that connection that Dio has with Jonathan, which was such a key element of him. Dio and Jonathan were specifically written to be black and white, ice and fire - a duality.
Because Diego and Johnny don’t have that, it’s really hard for me to see Diego being comparable to Dio because, just like comparing different JoJo parts, they seem like a different genre. They are very similar, both are cruel, ambitious and intelligent, but also fundamentally different. They are different characters, just like Johnny and Jonathan are different.
What matters is, that they work narratively in the story that’s being told.
For me personally, and I’m sure there’s no surprise there, I enjoy Dio a lot more.
Diego’s backstory and motivation don’t work for me as much, as I think Dio is more interesting in his maniacal obsession. This is probably exactly why some people find Dio to be poorly written, but I like that unlike Diego, he doesn’t need a reason or an explanation for turning out the way he did. He’s just an awful, cruel, sly and scary intelligent person. And I fucking STAN.
