DIO's 100 years underwater
Here are some thoughts/ideas about DIO’s 100 years on the ocean floor.
Joseph claims that DIO was ‘awakened’ when he was released from the ocean, implying that DIO was actually sleeping all these years. If he actually did, that’s honestly great for him because you know what the worst aspect of him being trapped underwater for 100 years would be? The isolation.
Joseph can’t really know whether or not DIO was actually sleeping all this time.
I could say that his head getting attached to Jonathan’s body would take up so much of his energy and power, and take so long to heal, that he might’ve been knocked out for a long time - but I’m making a post about the possibility that he was awake this whole time and Joseph was just using a figure of speech.
Think about DIO throughout his life. The first thing he always did as he came to power, was surrounding himself with people. They are mostly pawns and he used them as such, but I don’t think DIO particularly likes solitude for an extended time. I think he’s a quiet extrovert.
He definitely seems to love his peace, as clearly depicted in Part 3 where all of his goons give him a lot of space and he lurks around alone a lot, be it in his bedroom or his library, but I think he also feels comfortable knowing that people are nearby. He’s very intellectual and he needs someone to talk to and bounce his thoughts off. Maybe he also likes the energy or the sound of it - why else would he decide to settle down in a huge city instead of a more quiet place?
The fact that he has a genuine friend in Pucci, and that he uses his charisma to play people like a fiddle, showing that he understands how a human mind works and what it wants to hear, means that he is at least somewhat of a social person.
Now again, consider the 100 years of solitude in a tiny closed-off space, where he had no one but himself to talk to. Jonathan was there, but Jonathan was dead - and honestly, DIO probably talked to him anyway. Imagine all the thoughts and all the different ideas and beliefs that his mind must’ve gone through in all those years.
If he was released at some other point in time, he might’ve been a completely different person. There’s a chance that he could re-emerge as a good man, or maybe someone ten times worse. You can’t tell me that Jonathan’s last deed, his gentle acceptance of death, didn’t move DIO and that he hasn’t thought about it, and at some point even understood it. But as more time passed, bitterness, anger, and frustration set in more and more, and those enlightened thoughts were once again overwritten by darker ones.

The reason DIO is so fond of Pucci is that Pucci is not a yes man. Pucci doesn’t worship every word DIO speaks, unlike the rest of his followers. He dares to challenge DIO’s opinions and can carry a proper conversation with him, like an equal. That’s something DIO was lacking for 100 years when all he had was an echo chamber.
DIO was an extremely intelligent man, that was his biggest curse from the start, and he would’ve realized that living in the said echo chamber is extremely damaging. The fact that he understands that is proven by the fact that he likes Pucci so much. That is why I believe he did try to challenge himself with different ideas to keep his mind clearer, but he couldn’t last until the end. He had plans for the world, but the world went on without him, leaving him blind and deaf to all the progress for all those years. If he was awake in that coffin, I think DIO completely lost his mind. |
