Foo Fighters wears a hat
Let me explain to all of you why Foo Fighters from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean is most definitely wearing a hat:
It’s just not how Araki draws hair.
That should be all there is to say about it but a lot of people don’t seem to notice patterns in art styles and how specific artists draw specific things, so I want to talk about it and about how Araki DOESN’T draw hair.
Let’s look at some light & short-haired characters from Stone Ocean:

That should be all there is to say about it but a lot of people don’t seem to notice patterns in art styles and how specific artists draw specific things, so I want to talk about it and about how Araki DOESN’T draw hair.
Let’s look at some light & short-haired characters from Stone Ocean:
The way these character’s hair is shaded applies a hair texture, and moreover, the hair is also notably implied through the slight roughness of its outline. McQueen especially makes for a good example, as he has a tuft of hair in front, which is roughly how F.F.’s triangles would be drawn if that was her hair. Once again you can see that the said tuft has the implication of hair texture, shown through lines within it.
But you might think “F.F.’s hair is longer so it falls down, it doesn’t stick out like the short hair on these guys!” and generally, I’d agree (though still question why there isn’t a single indication of hair on her supposed hair)

However, thankfully there is a character in Vento Aureo who has a hairstyle similar to the one that many fans believe F.F. has, and the outline of his head, as well as the lining of his hair in general, STILL includes a texture.
His bangs are also outlined roughly, not in a clean, purposeful way like FF’s. Another character with a somewhat similar hairstyle is Abbacchio who would, if the green on FF’s head was her hair, essentially have a longer version of that hairstyle. Again, as you can see, there’s a lot of lines in there that imply strands of hair. There is ALWAYS implication of detail and hair when Araki actually draws hair. Now, let’s actually look at Foo Fighters. F.F.’s hat is often seen shaded and lined in a way where it gives the edge of it an appearance of thickness, and hair simply wouldn’t look like that - it would clash immensely with how Araki has always drawn har. |
There’s a notable line drawn on the edge between the outer and the inner part of the hat, similar to the case with Stephen Steel’s hat and Rohan’s headband. The shading of all these items is also notably different than Araki’s shading of hair. Additionally, looking at the panel of Abbacchio that I showed previously, you can see that his hair clip has edges outlined in the same way, showing its thickness. |
On this illustration, you can once again see how the way her head is shaded would absolutely not go along with how her hair would fall if that was indeed her hair - the highlights imply that it’s a smooth object. This one is less of a proof because Araki & colours, but I wanted to include it anyway, as the two characters wearing hats (FF and Weather) have their eyebrows coloured differently than their hats, while the two who’s hair we can see have eyebrows the same colour as their hair. |
The outline of her hat also always perfectly smooth on every single panel, without any indication of hair texture. Also, when her ear is seen, you can very clearly see it’s tucked under the hat, as opposed to having hair fall over it, or have hair tucked behind the ear. There is no hair texture, the approach to shading is different, it’s distinctly drawn to have thickness, and, again, Araki simply doesn’t draw hair this way. Basically, there’s no way that this is anything other than a hat. Please embrace the superior cuteness and style that is FF’s zigzag edge beanie, I beg of you UPDATE: Now that the anime came out, the hat becomes even more obvious, as you can see the edges being depicted thicker, making it clearer that it’s not hair. |
Also here’s foo’s design inspiration that i wasn’t aware of when i wrote my post initially;
