The Friendship of DIO and Pucci
Was it genuine? I think that’s both a yes and a no….
If the two were normal people who were not corrupted to their core, it would be very easy to say ‘yes’. They had great respect for each other and certainly held some deep feelings of admiration for each other. However, they are, in fact, not normal people.
They are both deranged megalomaniacs, and the genuine feelings that ARE there are mixed in with opportunism for achieving their own goals. I think it is a friendship, but it’s not a normal friendship. They are clearly very relaxed next to each other and like spending quality time together, DIO even saying that Pucci is the person he’s the most relaxed with. However, DIO also shows signs of paranoia around Pucci. |
DIO can never fully trust anyone, but he TRIES with Pucci, because this is integral to his plan, which REQUIRES him to have one person he can completely, entirely trust with his life and power.
I think DIO definitely tried his best to genuinely see Pucci as a friend, but I don’t think DIO could ever fully trust anyone. Pucci’s feelings for DIO were likely a bit more genuine, at the start. When DIO suggests that Pucci might betray him, Pucci, to me, looks genuinely hurt by the suggestion, and DIO also realizes this, going so far to actually APOLOGISE to him in what is definitely a very genuine way, in my opinion. |
I’d say where Pucci’s feelings become less genuine, is after DIO’s death.
He’s not cooperating with DIO anymore and he’s not doing it for his will, or his legacy - he’s doing it for himself. His ideal world happens to match DIO’s, but he’s not doing it for DIO, he’s using DIO’s research for his own benefit (or as he likes to claim, for the benefit of the world)
In the end… When the two were together, I think they had AS CLOSE to a genuine friendship as they possibly could, being the kinds of people that they were. However, the reason DIO looked for Pucci was not because he wanted a friend, it’s because he needed a friend - not for his sad empty soul, but for his Heaven project.

And Pucci didn’t run off to DIO because he wanted to get to know this amazing man he met on the church floor once, it was because he managed to ruin his own life through a series of unfathomably unpredictable events and he needed an out to save his soul.
They didn’t decide to meet because they genuinely wanted to get to know each other, but because their cooperation would conveniently get them both what they were looking for, however in the ~1 year they knew each other, they did seem to have several genuine moments. |
I would absolutely believe that their bond would probably strengthen and turn more genuine if they actually got to spend more time together, but I think that the time they had, while clearly comforting to both of them, was painted with colours of ambition rather than friendship.
